If you are interested in services at The Testing, Tutoring, and Counseling Department at TLC, the first step is to contact us. We will discuss our process with you, answer any questions, and provide you with forms.
Testing services are by appointment only. Families are asked to come in for an initial intake interview, without their child present; adults who are being evaluated are also asked to come in for this initial intake interview, although it is generally the same day as testing. The interview, which can take between one and one and a half hours, is a discussion of any current problems and concerns, the history of problems, and any specific questions that families would like to be addressed in the evaluation process.
We typically schedule two testing sessions with a licensed psychologist and one testing session with an educational diagnostician, with each testing session lasting between two and three hours. Occasional, doctoral-level externs provide administration for some of our assessments. The total amount of time needed depends upon the problems being assessed and the person’s age. Testing is conducted in a one-on-one environment (not group testing), in which the evaluator strives to help the individual feel comfortable and relaxed such that their best performance is elicited. Approximately four to five weeks after the last day of testing, the psychologist will schedule a meeting with the family/individual to provide a copy of the report, explain all results, discuss recommendations based upon the results, and to respond to any additional questions that may have come up.
We see young children through young adults in our counseling program. Appointments are made for an initial intake with parents or individuals. Afterward, the client is seen for 2-3 sessions to develop a treatment plan. Clinical impressions and a treatment plan are shared with the family and/or individual, and then therapy begins.
For Tutoring and Coaching
We will discuss your tutoring/coaching needs and answer any questions you may have. You will be asked specific questions about your student’s learning style and the type of help you or your child needs. This information will help us find the right tutor to match your needs. We will ask you what times and days are possible for the tutoring in order to fit your child into our tutoring schedule.
We do not require testing before beginning tutoring. Our tutors may do informal assessments and adjust teaching strategies as they go along. However, any information you can provide is helpful. If you or your child has been tested at TLC, we have access to those report in our file. If you or your child has a testing report from another source, or an individualized education plan (IEP) from school, we may ask you to send in or bring copies.
Insurance and Payment
Major credit cards and personal checks are accepted and a subsidy may be available for eligible families. Payment is due at the time of the session unless prior arrangements have been made. We are out-of-network, but we work with families to submit pre-authorization forms and other documentation need by their insurance plans. Payment plans are available for some services and we periodically offer discounts.
