Beyond High School for Virginia Families. December Virtual Parent Workshop Hosted by The Katherine Thomas School

December Virtual Parent Workshop Hosted by The Katherine Thomas School

Free and Open to the Public

Topic: Beyond High School for Virginia Families

Presenter: Diane Monnig, Transition Manager at The Arc of Northern Virginia

Audience: Virginia Parents of Students in Grades 8-12

Description: This workshop will provide an overview of future planning for Virginia students with IDD and their families as they prepare to transition from school to adult services. Once your student exits the school system, he or she must meet the eligibility criteria and funding availability to receive services from adult agencies.  The young adult and the parents must take the lead in defining and navigating the future. This means researching and advocating for services in areas such as employment, day supports, recreation, and housing. It also means planning for your child’s long term financial security.  This workshop will empower families to better navigate this process by providing a basic understanding of what steps families should take to plan and resources provided by The Arc of Northern Virginia.
