Rockville, MD,
February 11, 2003 – The Treatment and Learning Centers, a non-profit organization, which
helps children and adults with a wide range of disabilities, today announced
the launch of a training program for employers who hire individuals with
disabilities. Offered by the Outcomes
staff at TLC, this new service includes the following training topics:
Supervising Challenging Employees, Interpersonal Skills in the Workplace, Job
Accommodations, Supervisory Techniques for Employees with Disabilities, Job
Coaching and Hiring Persons with Disabilities.
The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, a long-time supporter
of TLC will be providing the start-up funding for the training program with a
$20,000 grant.
A joint board/staff team at TLC spent over a year and a half surveying, analyzing and conceiving the new service. From that research, TLC found a significant need to provide specific training to supervisory and managerial staff on how to work with challenging employees. The grant will enable the Outcomes staff at TLC, providers of community employment services in Montgomery County since 1986, to expand training to various corporations, non-profit agencies, and government organizations.
The goals of the training programs are to enable company supervisors to respond more effectively to the needs of challenging employees and to increase employee job retention.
“TLC is extremely grateful for the generous support
of The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation,” said Richard Pavlin,
executive director of TLC. “This
contribution will enable TLC to continue its efforts to improve the working
lives of adults with disabilities through the development of effective
communication and meaningful employment.”
The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation was
established in 1965 with the purpose of giving back to the community. Under the current direction of J.W.
Marriott, Jr. and Richard E. Marriott, this Foundation contributes annually to
a variety of needy and worthy organizations.
Many of these organizations provide civic and human services such as
relief from hunger, disaster, youth leadership and mentoring. Equally as important is the fostering of
secondary and higher education and assisting the disabled and disadvantaged in
qualifying for gainful employment.
The Treatment and Learning Centers, located in Rockville, Maryland,
enables children and adults to develop to their full potential, to communicate
effectively with others, and to achieve educational success. TLC provides services that strengthen their
abilities and respond to their changing needs.
With over 52 years of service to the community, TLC is committed to
integrity and excellence in our care and will strive to assist all, regardless
of their ability to pay. For more
