12TH Annual TLC/Courtesy Jeep Golf and Tennis
Rockville, MD, May 13, 2003 On Monday, June 2,
Lakewood Country Club in Rockville, Maryland is hosting the 12th
Annual TLC/Courtesy Jeep Golf and Tennis Classic to benefit TLC - The Treatment
and Learning Centers, a non-profit organization, which helps more than 2,700
Washington area children and adults with a wide range of disabilities. This charity tournament, one of the regions
longest standing, raises more than $100,000. The outing begins with tennis at
10:00 am, followed by a welcoming lunch, and then a noon start for golfers. The event will conclude with a silent
auction and awards dinner at 6:00 pm.
Special guest include Al Koken from SportsTalk 980 and Christine Brennan
from USA Today.
One of the most unique aspects of the tournament is
the Kids Tennis Clinic for the middle school students at TLC's Katherine
Thomas School. Approximately 30
students from KTS work on basic tennis skills with the clubs head tennis
pro. And at the end of the clinic, each
student takes home a brand new tennis racquet provided by Chris Zourdos,
Chairman of the tournament and owner of Courtesy Jeep, the tournaments
signature sponsor.
Due
to the physical and occupational therapy needs of some of the students at KTS,
the tennis clinic provides good practice of physical abilities as well as
learning and listening skills, said Richard Pavlin, executive director at
TLC. So not only is this a fun day for
the kids, but the most anticipated field trip of the year. Tennis lessons, a new tennis racquet and
swimming in the clubs pool may be a rare opportunity for many of these
children. TLC is extremely grateful for
Mr. Zourdos support of this tournament for the past 12 years, and the
wonderful experience he gives the children at KTS.
This
is the 4th and final year Lakewood Country Club will host the
tournament due to a June 10th start date for a total reconfiguration
of its 18 holes. It has been an honor
for us to have helped the center achieve such tremendous success over the past
few years, said Jorge Massa, General Manager at Lakewood Country Club. We are thrilled to be open long enough this
season to host such a prestigious tournament.
