The Treatment and Learning Centers
(301) 424-5200, ext. 270
Rockville, MD, July 22, 2003 The Treatment and Learning Centers, a non-profit
organization, which helps children and adults with a wide range of
disabilities, today announced that they have been awarded a grant from the
George Preston Marshall Foundation. The
$3,500 grant will be used to provide needed equipment for TLC's outpatient
speech-language services. TLC's
outpatient speech-language department provides a variety of services to more
than 300 children each year with speech and language disorders including
screenings, evaluations, individual and group therapy, and a summer camp for
preschoolers with language delays.
TLC's
pediatric clients, participating in both individual and group therapies, along
with their speech-language pathologist will be able to utilize the latest
computer software as well as interactive toys and games, and larger play
equipment to address communication delays and deficits. A strategy that TLC's speech-language
pathologists have found to be an effective therapy model for young children is
to incorporate traditional play and natural activities into therapy
sessions. This maximizes the childs
interest and participation in the therapeutic process and generalizes new
speech and language skills to occur in a childs daily life. The new and updated equipment will create a
practical and motivating therapeutic environment while facilitating progress,
accomplishing goals, and rapidly enhancing the childs communication skills.
We
feel that the knowledge and expertise of our staff and the therapeutic
techniques we utilize allow us to provide useful and effective services for our
pediatric clients, said Richard Pavlin, executive director at TLC. Everyone at TLC is extremely grateful of
the long-standing support of the George Preston Marshall Foundation and their
contributions to provide TLC with the best therapeutic environment for our
clients.
