Registration Information

TLC's
Summer Programs are for children ages 3-13 and
high school students in grades 9-12, who have special
needs in the areas of speech, language, perceptual
motor, sensory processing, academic development, and/or
skill maintenance. Some programs also fulfill the
requirements for Extended School Year Services (ESY).
Extended Day is
available
for children 5 years or older in all programs
(excluding the high school program). Extended day hours
are 8:00
AM to 9:00
AM and
3:00 PM
to 5:00 PM.
All summer programs take place at TLC's Katherine
Thomas School, located at 9975 Medical Center Drive in Rockville,
MD.

CAMP LITTLEFOOT
Friends Together
Combined
Occupational and Speech Therapy Camp
(Ages 5-7)

|
Camp Littlefoot is designed for young
children with speech-language and/or
occupational therapy needs. Although
chronological age is used as a guideline, we
also consider the developmental age and needs of
the child when determining camp placement.
This full-day combined OT and Speech Camp is
designed for children who need support in both
communication and sensory-motor development.
These areas are addressed through fun-filled
activities that promote development of
friendships and play skills, and foster
increased social interaction. A licensed
Occupational Therapist and Speech-Language
Pathologist lead this group, with assistants.
Current OT and Speech evaluations dated
after July 2011 or a current IEP is required
for admission.

CAMP
LITTLEFOOT
Speech Language Program
(Ages 3-7)

Designed for young children who have a
primary deficit in the speech-language area,
each group has an average of 6 – 9 children and
is led by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist
and an assistant. Therapeutic language goals are
addressed within the group setting. NEW!
An occupational therapist will
provide therapeutic camp activities as well as
consultation with the speech-language
pathologist several times each week to foster
fine-motor, gross-motor and visual-spatial skill
development. A current speech-language
evaluation report dated after July 2011
or a current IEP is required for admission.

CAMP

Sensory Integration/ Occupational Therapy Program:
Friends in Motion
(5-7 years)
Little Friends in Motion
(3-4 years)
 |
Intended for children who are experiencing
sensory processing and motor planning
difficulties, the areas addressed in these
programs include self-regulation and sensory
integration, play skills, motor planning,
abstract thinking and sequencing, and
socialization. The program utilizes theme-based
sensory-motor experiences, with an average group
size of 10 children led by a licensed
Occupational Therapist and assistants. A
current occupational therapy evaluation
dated after July 2011 or a current IEP is
required for admission.

THE KATHERINE
THOMAS SCHOOL
Learning Enrichment Program
(Ages 5-13)

The summer programs of the Katherine Thomas
Lower/Middle School are designed to address the
needs of students with language, learning, and
sensory-motor disabilities and/ or
high-functioning autism. This multi-sensory and
cross-curricular program is designed to engage
students through a creative, thematic approach
to learning; this year’s theme is “Travel
through Time.” Open to children ages 5-13,
participants move seamlessly through the content
areas of language arts, math, social studies,
and science. Curricular concepts are embedded in
the Arts and Physical Education, and are
reinforced through fun-filled activities and
explorations. The program engages students in:
• Reading • Writing Activities •
Social Studies • Mathematics • Science
Activities • Field Trips • Art • Music
• Drama
Emphasis is placed on development
of the students' verbal and interactive social
skills with both peers and adults through active
exploratory learning. The average group size is
12 students, taught by MSDE certified special
education teachers with teachers' assistants. An
Extended Day Program (morning and afternoon
hours) is available for students aged five years
through grade 8.

THE KATHERINE THOMAS SCHOOL
High School Program
(Grades 9-12)

Open to students entering grades 9-12 in the
fall. Students may attend a half-day program of
academic classes or a full-day, which includes a
job internship. Summer classes are specifically
designed to enable students to focus on
strengthening basic skills through an academic
theme. Skill areas include reading,
organizational study skills, writing, and
mathematics presented in a fun and creative
setting.
Students may earn Student
Service Learning (SSL) hours while participating
in supervised job internships. Students may
assist in TLC's Summer Programs classes or work
in placements located near The Katherine Thomas
School. After a brief lunch period, the
afternoon Internship program runs from 12:30 -
3:00 pm. Both half
day and full day programs include time for
lunch.

NEW!
CAMP LITTLEFOOT OUTDOOR
ADVENTURES
(Ages 5-8)
 |
An occupational therapist and speech-language
pathologist lead this fun-filled, small group
session for children who are experiencing
sensory processing, motor planning and
communication difficulties and
interaction problems. Sessions are held outdoors
and focus on:
• Self-regulation and
sensory skills • Visual-spatial skills •
Play skills • Language skills •
Motor-planning skills • Socialization and
communication skills • Abstract thinking,
problem solving and sequencing
Participants may register for the Tuesday group,
the Thursday group, or both groups (each meets
from 2:00 – 4:00 pm,
for six weeks). Parks visited include:
Meadowside Nature Center, Cabin John, Black Hill
Regional, Schaeffer Farm, Locust Grove Nature
Center, Woodley Gardens and Germantown (subject
to change). Parents provide transportation to
and from the selected park. There are no refunds
for missed sessions. A current occupational
therapy and speech-language evaluation dated
after July 2011 or a current IEP are required
for admission.

Additional Programs
TLC offers
additional programs either during or outside of TLC's
Summer Program hours. Program fees for these services
are separate and in addition to summer program fees.

The Kiwanis Clubs of Montgomery County,
Maryland Interaction Groups are small group
programs offered at our Gaither Road facility. Based on
the DIR®/ Floortime™ therapeutic model, the
Interaction Groups enable children between the ages of 2
½ - 6 years who have communication, interaction or
sensory processing concerns to interact and communicate
more effectively with others.

Staff
Teaching staff are certified and licensed special education
teachers and teacher assistants, speech-language pathologists
and occupational therapists. Volunteers are also utilized,
as available.
