From the Desk of Ms. Schwartz

Last Updated: 6/10/2010

There are only a few days left in the school year, and our theme of Soaring to Success  has held true.  On Tuesday, June 15th, at 5:30 PM, our seniors will be graduating.  We hope that you will join us (juniors and a parent are required) at Temple Beth Ami, which is up the street and around the corner from the school.   A tentative schedule for the last week of school is attached.  The students will be able to participate in the special activities by using their PBIS gotchas.  The school year has been extended for Montgomery County students, and private pay and DCPS students are invited to join them on June 17th and 18th.  If your student will be attending those days, please let Delma Benjamin know.

It has been a pleasure watching the students mature and grow both academically and socially over the course of the school year.  We hope that everyone has relaxing yet fun-filled summer, and we look forward to seeing our returning students in the fall!

From Gwenn Blau, High School Education Director:

Hooray!!  Not only have the students completed the third quarter, they survived the worst winter ever in the DC area.  The third quarter has been filled with many exciting academic and social activities to help our students grow and learn.  Some of the events that will take place in the last quarter are an Earth Day planting activity, Grandparents and Special Friends Day, a special art exhibit and concert, the long awaited Prom, final exams, and graduation.  A copy of the final exam schedule is below.

The Treatment and Learning Centers’ (TLC) Katherine Thomas School staff are proud of earning Top Vote Getter recognition from Bethesda Magazine.

School personnel have achieved this by their daily dedication to TLC’s Mission, Vision, Role, and Values:

Our Mission:  To improve lives and expand possibilities for individuals with special needs.

Our Vision:
TLC will be a highly visible, leading-edge organization with strong collaboration and advocacy relationships, and plentiful resources that support quality programs, staff, and facilities for individuals with special needs..

Our Role:
TLC will play several roles in furthering our vision and mission:

We will be an advocate for the people we serve through community awareness and education.
We will endeavor to catalyze change in the community to build effective partnerships.
We will strategically invest in program innovation.

Our Values

We value quality in everything we do. In evaluating quality, we measure the consumer's satisfaction with quality. Consumer satisfaction is one of our most important values.

We value innovation in all our work. We define innovation as a meaningful improvement in the way we work that will enhance consumers' satisfaction, service quality or efficiency in a positive and constructive way.

We value each other. Each one of us at TLC is an important contributor and a valued member of the organization. We respect each other as team members.

We value growth. To achieve our mission, we must increase our resources. We recognize the relationship between the numbers of individuals we serve and achieving our mission.

We value professionalism.  All staff will demonstrate by their behavior that they understand what is necessary to be professional and effective.

As 2009 winds down, the high school is revving up with plans for the new year.  The Winter After School Activities class schedules have been sent out, and they will begin on January 11th.  Mid-term exams will be from January 19-22nd, preceded by a review week.   In February, the high school administrators will begin training to implement our new information management system (hooray!), which we are able to do because of the generous funds raised at the KTS Auction in November.

Wednesday, December 23rd is an early dismissal day – 12:00 dismissal -and the staff will be allowed to start their vacations as soon as the students leave, so please make sure that your student is picked up on time.

Gwenn Blau and I, along with all the High School staff, hope that the beauty of the season fills your heart and home with happiness.  Have a safe and wonderful winter break, and we will see your students on January 4th!

This past Sunday, I was reading an article in the magazine section of the Washington Post, and the author mentioned a family tradition of using popcorn kernels as a reminder of things for which they are thankful.  Today, I “borrowed” some M&Ms from Ms. Gigi, and counted all the things for which I am thankful.   Of course, family and friends immediately came to mind.  But, as I watched the excitement in the gym this morning during the Student-Staff basketball game, I counted many more. The student cheerleaders cheered for the student team and the staff cheerleaders cheered for the staff team, but everyone in the gym cheered whenever a student made a basket.  About 10 students tried to make baskets from half court at half-time, and expressions of encouragement resonated throughout the room.  We were thrilled to have several alumni there as well. The staff kept the trophy again this year, but everyone felt good about having done their best.  What a great way to exemplify the values of the KTS community!

I am thankful for

·         Our students, who allow us to assist in overcoming the challenges and share in their triumphs

·         Our parents, who are very much a part of our team, offering us kudos and constructive criticism so we may provide the best possible education for their children

·         Our staff, who are dedicated to the goal of success for all of our students and who are the cheerleaders, motivating the students to strive just a bit harder to get to the next level.

·         Our alumni, who keep in touch and let us know how they are doing in the “real world”.

·         Our school, which allows us to celebrate our differences while learning about our own strengths and challenges.

May your Thanksgiving table groan under a load of popcorn kernels (or M&Ms)!

With warmest wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving,

Rhona
