April 2010
The HS has seen a little change with Ms Holloway leaving, but we have been fortunate to have Ms Gretz return as the teacher through the end of the year.
We hope you were able to purchase some of the great Original Art that your children created. They worked long and hard on these pieces. You will also be able to see these art works at the Spring Art Show, May 27 & 28.
We have four students that entered the Congressional Art Contest. This is a juried show and if selected, their piece will hang in the U.S Capital. Not all art work is accepted, but it is still an honor to be part of this competition. There will be a reception with Congressman Van Hollen, on Monday, April 26, at The Mansion at Strathmore on Rockville Pike, North Bethesda. All participating Students, Faculty, Family and Friends are Welcome.
Painting Classes:
They have just completed a little printmaking. These students designed their blocks and made several prints for cards and for wall displays. We have collected a few cards from each student to make a nice packet of hand made greeting cards that will be offered at the Art show for sale.
Even though this is a painting class, we decided to let these students work in clay and they were introduced to the potter’s wheel. When the pottery comes out of the kiln, then students will be able to glaze them to their favorite color.
Mixed Media
Students have completed their Faux Bronze Sculptures. These pieces are quite interesting. They first carved their shapes out of floral foam, then took plaster gauze and applied it over the whole object. Next they painted with a bronze paint. To make it look old with a patina finish, they took shoe polish and buffed it. You would think these were the real things.
Studio Art
We introduced these students to string art. Students first had to practice on a piece of graph paper to see how their design would look. Next they used push pins and made the design into a square of foam board. Using embroidery floss or yarn, students then were able to create these beautiful pieces of art using the string.
Ceramics
Students in ceramics have been working on the potters wheel along with making hand built items. Their assignment was to make 2 lanterns, one from the wheel and one hand build. Both are turning out very nice.

Updated 3/8/2010
With all the snow days and missing of school we have been trying to catch up completing old projects. Students in all of the classes have been working on a collage for the Parent Association fundraiser. Copies in black and white will be sent home to you to see and decide what you should purchase. Because these are only copies (we have the originals here at school) ask your child what colors they used and about the project to get a better idea.
Painting
Classes will be starting block printing. They will be designing their own personal logo, carving it out of linoleum and printing these designs.
Mixed Media
These students are designing a 3 D sculpture that will be carved out of foam, plastering and then painting to make it look like it is a bronze statue.
Studio Art
These students have finished their masks and will soon be displayed on the walls of the school. They are now working on a key holder made from construction paper. Most people when they see the project, think it is made of wood or plastic.
Ceramics
Students in ceramics have been working an on going project of tiles for the table top. They will begin designing a lantern that can be made either from a slab of clay or on the wheel, cutting out shapes for the light to come through and then glazing them.
