April - June 2010: What we're doing in class

Modern World History 1 - Revolution.  Students have been learning about the rise of powerful states and empires from Spain to Russia. This final unit introduces the revolutions that  transformed states and empires on both sides of the Atlantic. After a brief review of the American revolution, students spend most of the time exploring the French revolution through a close reading of Robespierre, an entertaining new book in the Wicked History series. Project work will relate to this book.

Modern World History 2 - Cold War and Decolonization. Students begin by learning about the causes of the Cold War and the framework of events that gave the conflict its unique drama: the Korean War: the Berlin airlift and construction of Berlin Wall; the Bay of Pigs and Cuban missile crisis; the War in Vietnam; end of Cold War. Within this framework of conflict, each student will complete a project on one of the individuals (outside the U.S.) who helped make the world more peaceful, including Mahatma Gandhi, Golda Meir, Nelson Mandela, Lech Walesa, Mikhail Gorbachev, Vaclav Havel, and Pope John Paul II.
